GARDEN PLANNER:

This Garden Planner, (shown above) is a handy, easy to use, planning tool for the home and hobby gardener. The chart shows proper planting times relative to average spring and fall frost dates for 21 common garden vegetables. Plan your garden for maximum yeild and output. The "timed phased" format allows you to visualize the timing of both planting and harvesting with each week during the growing season, yet make your time in the garden the most efficent! Notice how the chart is set up for progessive planting and harvesting throughout the growing season. Very cool.

Look at week May 31st: The chart tells me to plant tomato plants which I started from seeds 6 weeks earlier (mid April), direct seed sweet corn, green beans, and to harvest spinach and lettuce. See the red line? That line represents the average last frost date for where I live in Oregon (zone 7). But since this is a slide tool, the planner can be adjusted for anywhere according to the last frost date for where you live! See example for a more colder zone HERE representing a garden where the average last frost is mid June.

Lets plant some snow peas! By checking the planner, I see I should direct seed peas during the second week of April and expect to harvest from mid June into the third week of July.

There's more! Flip the planner over and you see more specific planting information such as depth to plant seeds or plants, how far apart in rows and row spacing. The planner also tells you when to last plant for harvesting befor your first killing frost in the fall. Click HERE to see an image of the back of the planner. Again the planner is set up progressively for fall crops from starting your onion sets to the last plantings of spinach.

Let's plant more snow peas for a fall crop! Since our first frost is around mid November, I slide my guide to place the red line at November 15th week. So I can plant peas again up to the last week of July and expect to harvest from the last week of September through October. The great thing about planting "spring crops" in the late summer is that they grow quicker and mature faster since the soil is warm and the daylight hours are longer. Another bonus is that they don't have the springtime pests and for me that means no slugs either! I am sure to get a bigger harvest in the fall than in the spring and provide fresh produce to the table well into fall!
