2392 Artic Kiwi, Siberian Gooseberry Actinidia arguta:
A strong-growing vine with dense, dark green foliage. The fragrant but inconspicuous white flowers appear in early spring. The fruit, which ripens in late summer or fall, is about 3/4"-11/4" long. It tastes much like the commercial kiwi fruit, to which it is closely related, but is somewhat sweeter and has smooth skin. The seeds are very small and not noticeable, so eating the fruits is somewhat like eating large seedless grapes. Most selections should be hardy to around -30° F. In the native Asian habitat of this species the vines typically grow wild in trees, where they are known to climb as high as 100'.

1A049 Amur Maple Acer Ginnala
A good hedge plant for zones 2-8, grows in most soils in sun and partial shade. A deciduous plant with dazzling fall colors. Space plants about 2 ft. apart. Acer seeds are slow to germinate and it may be the second year before you can transplant seedlings outside.

2193 Silver Buffaloberry (Sheperdia argentia)
Hardy to Zone 3. Grows to12ft. tall x 6ft.wide. Silver foliage (similar to Russian olive) offers multiple uses for this hardy shrub. Small yellowish flowers. Female has bright red fruit that are edible to people and birds. Note: We recommend CAPE seed germination primer be used for these seeds.

Makes a good hedge that can reach 15 ft. tall. Grows well in most soils in zones 2-9. Bears attractive silver-gray foliage and is loaded with tiny, fragrant yellow flowers in Spring. Space 2-3 ft. apart. Requires full sun.

LF122 JAPANESE HEDGE ROSE (Rosa rugosa)
Excellent flowering hedge for zones 3-9. Grows to 7 ft. tall in full sun and requires well drained soil. Spines make an effective barrier and plants produce loads of healthy orange hips in fall. Space plants 2 ft. apart. Seeds need 60 days cold treatment before sowing.

In case you haven't guessed from the name, this is a very heavy blooming shrub. Has beautiful foliage as well. Good container plant. Beautiful fragrant flowers.

Australia. Small graceful tree well adapted to growing inside. Has such a profusion of beautiful flowers that they seem to cover the entire plant. Cold hardy to 18 degrees outside.

2179 Wadalee Gum (Acacia catecu)
An attractive tree from India with short hooked spines and yellow flowers., growing to about 20 ft. tall. The leaves and small lower branches eaten by cattle. Heartwood yields important khaki dye.
The wood of Acacia catechu is light to dark red, darkening upon exposure. It is smooth and lustrous, taking a fine polish, with a coarse texture and close, straight grain. It is strong, very hard, heavy and durable. It is difficult to work, due to its hardness and extractive content. It has a high specific gravity of 0.98, with a weight of 61 pounds per cubic foot.
Wadalee is a multipurpose tree, whose wood extractives are used for tanning, dyeing (khaki), treating fishing nets and sails, medicinally (keersal – a pale crystalline deposit) and as a masticatory with pan or betel-leaf (kath). A pale yellow mucilaginous gum exudes from the tree, yielding one of the best substitutes for true gum arabic. The wood is used for structural work, house-posts, wells, agricultural implements, rice pestles, cane crushers, oil mills, clod crushers, hookah stems, bows, spear handles, tools and tool handles, sword handles, rolling pins, flutes, furniture, boats, firewood and charcoal for goldsmiths and wheel teeth and spokes.

2180 Earleaf Acacia (Acacia auriculiformis)
Fast growing small tree to 95 feet and 2 feet thick. Has flat, 8" leaves, short spikes of flowers and much-twisted pods. N. Australia, New Guinea. Excellent for tropical reforestation. It has been known to grow 19 feet in 2 years, and 55 feet in 8 years. Fast growing even in poor clay or sand soils. Builds soils by fixing nitrogen, and can smother Imperata grass. Produces up to 20 cubic meters of firewood or pulpwood per hectare per year. Stands soil ranging from pH 9.0 to 3.0, and rainfall from arid to 8 feet per year. Exudes a clear gum with unusual properties which may become economically valuable. Zone 10 and higher.

2182 Prairie Acacia (Acacia angustissima)
White 1/2 - 1" puff-like flowers tinged pink or lavender, with yellow stamens, May to July. Shrub to 5 feet with feathery bipinnate leaves. Missouri to Costa Rica. The bark is used for tanning and is added to fermenting drinks. The most northerly and probably the most hardy of our native Acacias.

2181 Hawaiian Mahogany (Acacia koa)
The monarch of native Hawaiian forest trees. Height varies from 60' to 100'with a dark green spreading crown of crescent shaped "leaves". Under perfect conditions the hard, straight trunks may be seen growing to 80' with 10' trunks. Greatly valued for it's beautiful red wood with wavy lines.

2185 Braidwood Wattle (Acacia kybeansis)
Evergreen bush will grow from 4'-6' wide, into a small tree about 20 feet tall, gray leaves, with spines on branches. Brilliant yellow flower ball in spring, you simply have to see it to believe how beautiful it is. Use as backdrop specimen. Established in Northern Arizona. Will tolerate cold and some snow.

A fast growing small tree to about 20 feet wit a spreading crown, pendulous reddish branches, and blue-green long curved leaves. Named for it's bright yellow to orange flower heads in later winter-spring that are used to make natural wreaths. Zones 9-11.

2189 Umbrella Thorn (Acacia tortilis)
Very fragrant white to pale yellow flowers, on a small tree growing to 25 ft. or more with an umbrella shaped crown. Has spiny branches, seed pods are tightly spiraled. The flower clusters of this tree are most unusual as they hang down from the canopy in large balls. Pick one of these balls and carry it into a room and it will fill the room with a sweet perfume fragrance.

2190 Paperbark Thorn (Acacia sieberiana)
A flat topped tree from Ghana. Blue grey pinnate leaves, cream flowers. The name Paperbark Thorn comes from the flaking, peeling bark of the tree. The thin canopy allows a good lawn to be grown under the plant, making it a good yard specimen.

2191 Java Whitebark Acacia (Acacia leucopholea)
Native to Java. Valued for its heartwood which is yellow to reddish brown & very hard. Yellow flowers. 45' height. Acacia leucophloea (syn. Mimosa leucophloea) is easily identified by its white bark and large wide spreading limbs. It is most often utilized as shade for livestock and as a source of dry-season fodder. Growing well on alluvial or infertile soils, A. leucophloea also has great potential as a reforestation species for degraded sites.

Australian native with attractive blue/green leaflets presenting a feathery effect. The branching is slightly whorled with a delicate upward sweep. Branches have paired thorns. Yellow flowers.
