H005 Agrimony
Agrimonia odorata
The plant is found abundantly throughout England, on hedge-banks and the sides of fields, in dry thickets and on all waste places. In Scotland it is much more local and does not penetrate very far northward. Agrimony has an old reputation as a popular, domestic medicinal herb, being a simple well known to all country-folk. It belongs to the Rose order of plants, and its slender spikes of yellow flowers, which are in bloom from June to early September, and the singularly beautiful form of its much-cut-into leaves, make it one of the most graceful of our smaller herbs. A fast growing perennial to 3-5 feet tall with yellow flowers on long slender spikes. Grows in zones 3-8. The plant also produces a yellow/gold dye.

An interesting wildflower that resembles a carrot. The root was chewed by North African caravaners to protect themselves fm the sun. It contains 8-methoxypsoralen which stimulates pigment production in skin exposed from ultraviolet light. An annual for all zones.

H078 Black Elder
Sambucus nigra
This herb has long been used to heal hemorrhoid problems. It gives immediate relief. To make a compress, mix the flowers of elder and honeysuckle together and pour boiling milk over them. Let the mixture steep for about 20 minutes. Dip a towel into the mixture and apply to the area of pain. An ointment can be made from the green leaves that is also beneficial to hemorrhoids. Apply the ointment while it is still hot. A perennial for zones 6-8.

A very pretty wildflower with stems that creep along the surface. They root wherever they touch the ground, forming loose clusters. It is often referred to as Earth Apple because of its apple scent. A tea made from the leaves is very good for digestion. The pleasant smelling tea also makes a great insect repellent. Simply splash some on before going outside and the bugs will leave you alone. Biennial. Ethnic specialty with the flavor of Cilantro! Unlike Cilantro, Culantro may be preserved easily by freezing or drying. Small and low growing, with a rosette of toothed, lance-shaped leaves. Slow to germinate and grow, but offers a long harvest period. Requires shady growing conditions and should be started indoors. Great container or houseplant. Also known as Spiny Coriander, Ngo Gai and Recao. 75-90 days to harvest when started indoors.

3128 Devil's Walking Stick
Aralia spinosa
Also know as Prickly elder, Angelica tree, Hercules' club, Toothache bush or tree. The Aralia spinosa is a small tree, growing to about 30 feet. Best suited for zones 4-9. The leaves are very large and long, often 3 to 6 feet in length, prickly, bipinnate, and borne on long, prickly petioles. The flowers are white, and disposed in numerous umbels, forming a very large panicle. The involucres are small and few-leaved. The fruit consists of blackish, juicy berries. The aralia spinosa inhabits the United States in various parts, from Pennsylvania to Louisiana, and westward to Missouri, growing in damp and rich woods and fields. It is frequently grown in the Northern States for ornamentation. It blooms in August and September.

Source of lemongrass oil used to flavor teas, candies, chewing gum, etc. A tropical annual that can be grown as an annual in the US. Many uses, crushing a few leaves in your hands will release lemony fragrance that repels mosquitoes. Essential oil contains large amounts of citral and geraniol which are used in flavorings and perfumes. Lemon Grass is also a beautiful addition to mixed containers and flower borders.

A Perennial for zones 4-9, also a good container plant. Also known as Japanese mugwort, Kui hao. The Japanese make delicious rice dumplings called yomogi mochi with this herb. Young leaves are boiled slightly and then pounded into dumplings made with gelatinous rice, adding distinctive and delightful colour, aroma and flavor. Young leaves and seedlings are used in soups and salads also. Also used to dye cotton and silk. Prefers full or partial sun and well-drained soil. Ht. 1m/3ft.
