I have flowers and vegetable seeds already growing and will be transplanting to my outdoor garden in a couple of weeks. The included plugs wick up water from below and the warmth and full spectrum lights from above encourage fast germination. My flowers seeds were already starting to germinate in less than 24 hours! AeroGarden does include nutient tabs with the kits to feed your baby plants aeroponically until yu are ready to transplant them outdoors or to containers of choice. Hydroponic systems typically do not incorporate built-in lighting systems. Lighting systems must typically be purchased as separate components and assembled by the consumers. Hydroponic lighting systems generally consist of a ballast, reflector hood, lights and an electronic timer. The consumer must then suspend the lighting system over the hydroponic unit and then continually raise the lights as the plants grow. Complete hydroponic lighting systems often cost hundreds of dollars, which is considerably more than the cost of AeroGrow's entire kitchen garden system!
  The AeroGarden is a stand alone unit and does not require any addtional components! The full spectrum lights are contained in the reflective hood and are raised and lower by the hood arm attached to the unit's base.

  The consumer simply adds the included plant-specific nutrient tablets to the AeroGarden when instructed by the microprocessor-based nutrient cycle delivery system, usually once every two weeks. The nutrient tablets eliminate the need for measuring and mixing multi-part nutrient formulas and storing various nutrients in separate containers. The nutrient tablets customize multiple nutrients and minerals such as calcium, magnesium and iron for specific plant varieties at different stages of their growth. How simple is that?
